Wednesday Fans Celebrate Season 3 News and Spin-Off Rumors

Netflix has released the first look of Billie Piper in the upcoming second season of Wednesday, the new gothic comedy starring Jenna Ortega. The 42-year-old actor has joined the cast as Isadora Capri, a genius recluse and head of music at Nevermore Academy.

Piper is known for her role as Brona Croft/The Bride of Frankenstein in Penny Dreadful and will no doubt be eager to return to similar material. A former child prodigy, Isadora Capri has taken an interest in Wednesday’s musical ability. She also appears to be working with werewolf student Enid Sinclair, played by Emma Myers, who is set to return for the new season.

Netflix posted the first stills of Piper on the character alongside news of a second season. The series was originally released on Netflix in November 2022 and found success from the outset. Wednesday quickly became Netflix’s most-watched English-language show of all time, with 252 million viewers tuning in worldwide. In January 2023, the streaming giant announced that a second season had been greenlit and is now set to arrive this August.

Wednesday is a horror comedy that reimagines the world of the Addams Family from the perspective of Wednesday Addams. Played by 22-year-old Jenna Ortega, Wednesday attends Nevermore Academy, where she lives a secret double life as a high schooler and a “monster”. Released in 2022 to critical acclaim and an ever-growing cult fanbase, the series also picked up an Emmy nod.

Season 3 TBA and Spin-Off Series Confirmed

In addition to the first look at Billie Piper’s character in Wednesday season 2, Netflix has also confirmed two additional season 3 TBA: a third season of the record-breaking series has been officially announced, as well as a potential spin-off in the works.

Discussing the future of the Wednesday universe, co-creator Alfred Gough said that there are other potential characters to explore. He said of the spin-off series: “It’s something we’re noodling; there are other characters we can look at.”

The news was greeted with a mixture of joy and confusion on social media. Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Wednesday’s mother, Morticia Addams, confirmed the news in her way with an Instagram post: “When Wednesday comes, a better day. Wednesday season three. It’s official…we shall return.” Fans flooded the post with comments including, “And for many more seasons,” and “I can’t wait to see the second season, I’m waiting for it with great curiosity… and the third is already official, fantastic news!”

Some fans were relieved at the news that production could start soon. Aspirations for shorter wait times between seasons were high, especially in the comment section of the post. Despite the season being greenlit in January 2023, fans won’t have to wait too long until season 2, but some still felt it was too long after the first season dropped in 2022. “I’ll be gripping the sheets in agony waiting, but please… don’t let us wait 3 years again,” one fan wrote.

Tim Burton, 66, will return as executive producer and occasional director of the series. The veteran filmmaker recently worked with Ortega on Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to his 1988 cult classic.

The show’s new season is getting an even more star-studded cast. Along with Billie Piper, Wednesday has cast names like Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. The new season also marks the return of many series regulars like Gwendoline Christie as headteacher Larissa Weems and Luis Guzmán as Wednesday’s father, Gomez Addams.

Meanwhile, Ortega has also upped her involvement in the series. Following some negative press around a podcast interview with the actress, Ortega has been promoted to a producer on the show. In the podcast, she had discussed how at times, she often “changed lines” when she was unhappy with them and had to “put her foot down” over inconsistencies in Wednesday’s character. Burton soon issued a public statement of support to her, saying her words were taken out of context. Co-creator Alfred Gough added, “She’s such a big part of this that it makes sense that she’s now a producer.” The producer also said Ortega was already so involved in the series and always offered script notes.

Joanna Lumley, one of Wednesday’s new additions, expressed her joy at being part of Burton’s universe. “There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they’ve created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating.”

Billie Piper, Wednesday season 2, and a new spin-off series confirmed. As fans anxiously await the August release, anticipation will be high for the return to the macabre halls of Nevermore Academy.
