Strange New Worlds Season 3 Teases Explosive Science Plot
Paramount+ has officially released the trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which will premiere on July 17, 2025. The latest installment has had a long wait for fans, as it is only a few months after Paramount released a trailer for season 2 of the series in April.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 picks up where the previous season left off. At the end of the last season, the U.S.S. Enterprise is attacked by the Gorn and is invaded on a Federation colony world. A number of the crew and others present on the ship are captured and held hostage. The choice of whether to obey Starfleet and retreat or disobey orders and try to rescue the captives lies with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). As fans expect, the brave captain would rather choose the difficult decision, and the season will follow the story of his rescue mission.
In October, Paramount showed a brief preview of the first episode of season 3 at New York City Comic-Con. In the preview, which picks up immediately from where the last episode of the previous season ends, the Enterprise crew is seen escaping through space from Gorn soldiers. The preview shows the war against the Gorn as another highly dangerous battle in space that viewers can expect from the new season.
The new trailer continues from there by promising an end to the battle against the Gorn while teasing a brand new danger. In the first episode, the Enterprise crew will continue their mission of rescuing other crew members captured by the Gorn and defending the planet. This being a major part of the arc for the first few episodes does not mean that the Gorn is the only problem for the Enterprise crew. The new trailer shows the crew will not only complete the fight against the Gorn but will also encounter a new enemy that will test them beyond their limits. The third season will take the crew of the Enterprise to new territories and explore new themes, and test their loyalty, bravery, and endurance.
The trailer also shows that the cast will return as the main and recurring characters for the third season. The season will also feature the return of Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O’Sullivan), a familiar face and character from Star Trek: The Original Series that was originally played by Michael Strong. In the time of Strange New Worlds, Dr. Korby is an archaeologist who specializes in medical archaeology and is Chapel’s fiancé. He was presumed to be dead until his surprise return to life, which will cause complications in the relationship between Chapel and Spock.
Season 3 will also feature guest appearances by Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt. Both are also well-known actors and comedians in their own right, and their involvement shows that the season will take on different genre tones and expectations. The April trailer also teased this variety in tone by showing clips from the first episode of the season as a high-energy space battle while also hinting at a more casual side-adventure episode for the crew. The new trailer doubles down on this point as it also shows more moments of the crew having fun together. They will still get to solve a mystery and engage in several high-action episodes while also having some romantic subplots to explore, and most importantly, another classic laugh-out-loud moment at the end of the trailer.
The funny moment near the end of the trailer also shows James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) in the Enterprise captain’s chair. It is not immediately clear what his role in the arc for the first few episodes will be, as the battle against the Gorn is far from over. As of now, Kirk’s command of the Enterprise is temporary, as the previous captain of the Enterprise notes. As Pike tells Kirk in the scene, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
In a lighter note, the preview ends with a fan favorite cast member attempting to break a classic Spock move. The scene shows Spock demonstrating a high-five to Oswalt’s Vulcan character, and he first successfully lands the gesture. He then asks the Vulcan character to repeat the action “down low,” but delays long enough for Spock to throw the “too slow” move. The confused Vulcan asks, “Why would you do that?” to which Spock responds in his trademark monotone, “Because you are too slow.”
Season 3 Premiere Date and Schedule
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 will premiere on Paramount+ on July 17, 2025, Thursday. The season will drop one episode weekly on Thursdays for 10 weeks, with the final episode premiering on September 11, 2025.
The series has been renewed for season 4, which would also be its final season if the deal is renewed. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 has more than lived up to expectations as an official Star Trek franchise. Its episodic storytelling structure, strong character dynamics, modern updates to the franchise, and visual spectacle set it apart and have been important parts of its success thus far.
