Florence County, South Carolina, deputies have arrested nine teenagers for the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, S.C., on June 24. The shooting death began “over a girl,” according to authorities, and one of the suspects may have videoed the incident, in part.
Wright’s family is mourning the loss of their son, who died at the scene of the crime after being shot multiple times. Police arrested a 19-year-old suspect and several others over the following weeks. On June 25, police said they had arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, who they said killed Wright in a shooting. The fatal shooting had allegedly been preceded by a dispute or argument between the two that got heated. The deputies with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, located on First Neck Road, where Wright’s body was found.
This part of South Carolina is mostly rural, located about 45 miles (72 km) west of Myrtle Beach. In the following weeks, law enforcement would arrest several more suspects for their roles in aiding and abetting the crime, according to multiple law enforcement sources and media reports. In addition to Raper, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office also charged Wright’s girlfriend of the same age, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach.
It was not immediately clear how Kistenmacher was connected to the shooting. However, sources told the press that she was aware of Raper’s intention to carry a weapon when he went to the spot on First Neck Road to confront Wright, and she allegedly was part of a conspiracy to get Wright to the meeting point.
Ashley Lindsey, Wright’s mother, told Fox News Digital that the court process has been frustrating for her. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
Detectives from the sheriff’s office told the press that Wright was lured to the spot on First Neck Road where he would meet with Raper, and the deputies with the department knew that Raper had a gun when he went to the scene.
Not only that, the deputies were aware that Raper had previously threatened Wright. Investigators, by way of the arrest warrant, also told the media that one of the suspects, whose identity they did not disclose, had video-recorded the shooting, in part.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has arrested several others, according to media reports and records, including the girl the 16-year-old had been fighting with, who was also reportedly one of Wright’s girlfriends. Investigators have arrested several more teenagers from the Myrtle Beach area for alleged accessory after the fact and have charged each of them with accessory before the fact.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has not provided an update or new information, citing the ongoing investigation, and declined to comment. Prosecutors said the same. Additionally, Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye declined to comment on whether they think all those arrested were involved in planning the shooting with Raper. According to media reports, three of the teens were charged with murder. Prosecutors say they and Raper each face murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
South Carolina law has a legal doctrine called “the hand of one being the hand of all,” which means “if multiple people are involved in a single crime, all are equally responsible for each other’s actions. In court, authorities and prosecutors have been charging at least some of the suspects as adults, and the sheriff’s office would not say whether they plan to do so with the remaining suspects.
Sheriff T.J. Joye said the shooting was the result of a simple fight over a woman. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Joye told reporters. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Wright was working in the front yard of the family’s house when the incident occurred, and the victim had three bullets to the head, in the right temple, and one in the left temple, prosecutors said. Kistenmacher is out on bond, and the parents of the other teens arrested will have to pay the full amount of the bond. The remaining three arrested face the same murder charge, and one of those arrested has a $500,000 cash bond.
