Ontario Launches Major Hospital Renovation in Petrolia
The Ontario government has officially started construction on a significant hospital renovation at Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital in Petrolia. The project, backed by an investment of more than $17 million, is part of Bluewater Health’s Rural Health Capital Improvement Project. The goal is to ensure residents of Lambton County and nearby communities have access to high-quality, convenient care close to home.
Focus on Emergency Department Upgrades
The renovation will modernize over 8,200 square feet of existing space at the hospital. Key improvements include emergency department upgrades, such as an improved triage space, a dedicated waiting area, renovated exam rooms, a new airborne isolation room, and a new ambulance entrance. These enhancements aim to streamline patient intake and bolster the hospital’s capacity to handle emergencies efficiently.
Diagnostic Imaging and Infrastructure Improvements
Upgrades to the hospital’s diagnostic imaging department are also planned, including renovations to the x-ray area and associated rooms. Infrastructure improvements will address aging equipment by upgrading essential systems, notably a new air handling unit. These enhancements are designed to modernize the hospital’s facilities, ensuring safer and more effective patient care.
Supporting Lambton County Healthcare and Economic Growth
Bluewater Health provides healthcare services to approximately 131,000 residents across Sarnia-Lambton, including acute care, complex continuing care, and ambulatory services. The construction, expected to be completed by Fall 2029, will not only enhance patient care but also support job creation with good-paying construction positions.
Part of Ontario’s Broader Health Infrastructure Investment
This rural health improvement initiative forms part of Ontario’s broader $64 billion, 10-year hospital capital plan, which aims to support more than 50 major hospital projects province-wide. The plan is projected to deliver about 3,000 new hospital beds, in addition to the 3,500 already added since 2020, and support up to 30,000 jobs annually, including those in construction and related industries. In 2026-27, Bluewater Health is set to receive over $2.7 million through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund, specifically for critical infrastructure needs.
Commitment to Healthcare Modernization and Local Services
Provincial leaders emphasize the ongoing commitment to healthcare modernization through the Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care strategy. The Ontario government is investing over $281 million in 2026-27 to upgrade and repair infrastructure in 126 hospitals and 67 community healthcare facilities across the province, marking a 9.4% increase from the previous year. These actions are part of a larger effort to improve healthcare infrastructure and ensure residents of all ages can connect to the high-quality care they need, when and where they need it.
