Ontario Announces Major Investment in Northern Ontario Agriculture

The Ontario government has committed more than $6.1 million in funding, delivered through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), to support 14 agriculture projects throughout northern Ontario. This initiative aims to equip farmers, businesses, and organizations with vital tools and infrastructure to improve productivity, extend growing seasons, and increase crop yields, ultimately strengthening the northern economy.

Focus on Economic Growth and Job Creation

According to George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth, the investments will play a crucial role in supporting rural communities and fortifying the region’s economy. "These investments will help northern farmers grow their operations, create new opportunities, and further unlock the economic potential of northern Ontario’s agriculture industry," Pirie stated. The overarching goal is to create good-paying jobs and support a competitive, resilient, and self-reliant economy in the north.

Highlighted Agriculture Projects and NOHFC Funding

  • Northeast Community Network will receive $1 million to install tile drainage on roughly 1,800 acres and an additional $948,830 for 1,700 acres, both initiatives located in the Mushkegowuk-James Bay District. These projects will expand arable land, address excess water issues, improve farmland productivity, and help farmers boost crop yields and extend growing seasons.
  • Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance (NOFIA), a non-profit supporting agriculture growth and R&D, is allocated $1 million to install tile drainage over more than 1,800 acres in the Timiskaming-Cochrane region. The project is expected to enhance farmland drainage, enable the growth of a wider variety of crops, and stimulate local business activity.
  • Area One Farms will use $860,000 to install tile drainage on over 1,700 acres in the Clay Belt region, expanding arable land and increasing farm productivity. This effort aims to benefit the local economy by supporting farm expansion and crop diversification.

Strengthening Northern Ontario's Agriculture Infrastructure

The Ontario government is focusing on investments that protect northern industries and jobs, address the challenges posed by U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions, and open up new economic development opportunities. The province has also raised the NOHFC’s annual budget to $110 million, further supporting rural and urban communities, including Indigenous communities across northern Ontario.

NOHFC’s Broader Impact and Quick Facts

  • The NOHFC supports both public and private sector economic development through a variety of funding programs, helping northern communities realize their growth potential.
  • Since June 2018, the NOHFC has approved over $1.1 billion for more than 9,000 projects in northern Ontario, leveraging over $3.4 billion in investment, creating more than 11,580 new jobs, and sustaining over 2,345 jobs.
